Whitebeam: when to prune it?

What else to prune in those months? January · February · July · August · December
Whitebeam: how to prune it?
- Little needed: remove crossing branches and water shoots.
- Train a young tree with a single leader and a clear stem tall enough for the spot, e.g. 2 m above a path.
- Cut out branches with fireblight at least 30 cm below the visibly affected part, in dry weather.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: July–August and December–February. You don’t have to prune in every one.
- Grows best when left alone. Only remove dead, diseased or awkward branches.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in July–August can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Whitebeam flowers in May, when it attracts bees.
- In September–October birds eat the fruit: leave some on the plant or on the ground.
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Pruning too much: it grows best when left alone.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: Can carry fireblight.
