Catmint (Nepeta racemosa): when to prune it?
After the first flush in July, cut everything back by half. In March, cut off the old stems.
Catmint (Nepeta racemosa): how to prune it?
- In July, cut all the stems back by half, even if some flowers remain.
- Water afterwards in dry spells: about two weeks later it flowers again.
- In autumn, leave the old stems standing: they protect the clump in winter.
- Cut those old stems off in March, just above the new leaves at the base.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and July. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Catmint (Nepeta racemosa) flowers in May–September, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
Caution: In March, do not cut into the young leaves at the base: that is where the new growth comes from.
