Winter-flowering clematis: how to prune it?

1. Cut over-long and tangled stems back to just above a few pairs of healthy leaves.
2. Remove dead stems and shoots browned by frost.
3. An overgrown plant can be cut back hard after flowering; the next display will then be somewhat smaller.
4. Do not prune in summer or autumn: you would remove the flower buds before winter.

• Pruning in March–April can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
• Winter-flowering clematis flowers in December–March, when it attracts bees.

• Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
