Lavender wands

  • Makes: 1 wand
  • Time: 30 min + a few hours to soften
  • From: Lavandin

Ingredients

  • 13 fresh, long lavandin flower stems (an odd number)
  • 1.5 m narrow satin ribbon (± 5 mm wide)

Method

  1. Cut the stems as long as possible, just as the first flowers open, and strip off the leaves. Leave them for a few hours: they become supple and do not snap when you bend them.
  2. Gather the stems with the flower heads level and tie them firmly just below the heads with the start of the ribbon; leave the short end hanging along the stems.
  3. Hold the bundle with the heads pointing down and carefully fold the stems back one by one over the heads, so they form a little cage around the flowers. The long end of the ribbon comes out between the stems.
  4. Weave the ribbon alternately over and under the stems, round after round, until the flower heads are completely enclosed. Pull the ribbon snug each time.
  5. Then wind the ribbon tightly around the stems down to the bottom, tie it to the short end and finish with a bow. Trim the stems level.
  6. Leave the wand to dry for a week; the ribbon loosens a little, so tighten it if necessary.

Storing: They stay fragrant for a year or more. Squeeze them now and then to refresh the scent. Put them in the wardrobe, a drawer or among the linen.
