Dutchman’s pipe: when to prune it?

In February–March, before new shoots start. It tolerates hard pruning.

What else to prune in those months? February · March

Dutchman’s pipe: how to prune it?

  1. Cut out dead, thin and damaged stems.
  2. Shorten overlong or rampant shoots to the desired shape.
  3. To rejuvenate it, cut a few old stems back to about 1 m above the ground; it will shoot again.
  4. Thin it out so that light and air reach between the leaves.

How much to cut, and how often?

  • One pruning period a year: February–March.

What does it mean for wildlife?

  • Pruning in March can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
  • Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.

Common mistakes

  • Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.

Caution: Wear gloves: all parts are poisonous. Do not leave prunings lying where children or animals can reach them.
