Jetbead: when to prune it?
It needs little pruning. Thin it every few years in February–March, before it comes into leaf.
Jetbead: how to prune it?
- Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches completely.
- Every few years take out a few of the oldest branches at the base to keep the shrub young and airy.
- If you want to keep it smaller, cut the branches back to a side shoot after flowering, in June–July. You will then lose part of the fruits.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: February–March.
- Prune in moderation: never remove more than about a third of the shrub at once.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in March can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Jetbead flowers in May–June, when it attracts bees.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: If you prune hard in summer, you lose the fruits. Keep prunings with fruits out of reach of children and pets. Jetbead is poisonous: wear gloves and keep clippings away from children, pets and livestock.
