Leatherleaf viburnum: when to prune it?
After flowering (June–July).
Leatherleaf viburnum: how to prune it?
- Little needed: cut overlong or awkward branches back to a side branch.
- It does tolerate hard pruning and sprouts well from old wood: an oversized shrub can be cut back hard over two or three years.
- Wear gloves.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: June–July.
- Grows best when left alone. Only remove dead, diseased or awkward branches.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in June–July can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Pruning too much: it grows best when left alone.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: Wear gloves, long sleeves and, for a big pruning job, a dust mask: the felty hairs irritate the skin and airways. June–July falls in the nesting season: check for nesting birds first. Leatherleaf viburnum is poisonous: wear gloves and keep clippings away from children, pets and livestock.
