Trumpet vine: when to prune it?
At the end of winter (February–March).
Trumpet vine: how to prune it?
- It flowers on new shoots: cut last year’s side shoots back to 2–3 buds on the main framework.
- In the first few years, build up a framework of a few main branches and tie them in, as the aerial roots of young stems don’t always hold well.
- Also remove branches growing towards the gutter, under tiles or around windows.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: February–March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in March can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
Caution: Wear gloves and long sleeves: the leaves can irritate sensitive skin.
