Fragrant snowball (Viburnum × carlcephalum): how to prune it?

1. Cut a few of the oldest or most crowded branches to the base to keep the shrub open and light.
2. Remove dead, weak and crossing branches.
3. Shorten overlong branches to a side shoot or bud, so the natural, loose shape is kept.

How much to cut, and how often?

• One pruning period a year: May–June.
• Prune in moderation: never remove more than about a third of the shrub at once.

What does it mean for wildlife?

• Pruning in May–June can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
• Fragrant snowball (Viburnum × carlcephalum) flowers in April–May, when it attracts bees.
