Trees · question 3
Look at the sprays, the small cones and the top of the tree.
The small cones sit at the tips of the sprays, sometimes high up in the tree.
- Round little cones like a mini football: About 1 cm, with shield-shaped scales. The top and branch tips droop; often white X-shaped markings under the sprays.
- Elongated little cones that open like a small flower: 1–1.5 cm, with overlapping scales. The top stands upright; crushed sprays smell fruity.
- Sprays pointing in all directions, not in flat fans: Fast-growing tall hedge or tree; no white markings under the sprays; round cones of 1.5–2 cm.
- Round, cord-like shoots with small, awl-shaped scale needles: A gigantic tree with thick, soft, reddish-brown bark.
