Chilean jasmine: when to prune it?
In March, when the worst frosts are over. It flowers on young shoots, so spring pruning does not cost you any flowers.
What else to prune in those months? March
Chilean jasmine: how to prune it?
- Cut frosted or dead shoots back to healthy wood (green under the bark).
- Shorten last year’s side shoots to 2–3 buds and thin out overcrowded stems.
- Leave a few long main shoots to cover the wall or the trellis.
- In summer, trim shoots that are too long and tie them in.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in March can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
Caution: Wear gloves: the milky sap can irritate the skin and must not get into the eyes.
