Common jasmine: when to prune it?
After flowering (September) or in March.
Common jasmine: how to prune it?
- Thin out: cut back flowered and overlong stems and remove a few old, bare stems at the base.
- A tangled plant can be cut back hard in March; it reshoots well.
- Keep it within its support: cut twigs that stick out too far back to a side shoot.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and September. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in March can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
Caution: Not fully hardy: choose a sheltered spot. Only cut out frost-damaged branches once you can see where it is reshooting.
