Common sage: when to prune it?

In April, and lightly after flowering in July.

What else to prune in those months? April · July

Common sage: how to prune it?

  1. In April, cut last year’s growth back by a third to a half, just above new leaves.
  2. After flowering, in July, remove the flower stems and lightly reshape the plant.
  3. Start young: a plant pruned every year stays dense and bushy.

How much to cut, and how often?

  • There are 2 pruning periods a year: April and July. You don’t have to prune in every one.

What does it mean for wildlife?

  • Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.

Caution: Don’t prune into bare wood. After 4–5 years sage becomes woody and sparse: replace it with a new plant or a cutting.
