Downy birch: how to prune it?

1. Needs little pruning: only remove dead or awkward branches.
2. Cut a branch just outside the branch collar, without leaving a stub; take large branches off in two stages so the bark doesn’t tear.
3. Never top a birch: the crown becomes ugly and the tree goes into decline.

How much to cut, and how often?

• One pruning period a year: July–October.
• Grows best when left alone. Only remove dead, diseased or awkward branches.

What does it mean for wildlife?

• Pruning in July–August can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
• Host plant: caterpillars of butterflies or moths eat the leaves.
• As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
• Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
